Growing Buckwheat 

• Where to grow Buckwheat

Communal Lands (Historically): Buckwheat was previously grown in Zimbabwe on communal lands after short-season crops like ground nuts. This implies it can fit into a rotation system and tolerate some level of less intensive management. The 

• Soil and Fertilizer

Buckwheat will produce a better crop than cereal grains on low fertility soils. It will produce a better crop on newly cleared land. Buckwheat yields do not respond to high applications of fertiliser, especially nitrogen

How to sow buckwheat

Since the buckwheat plant has a fine root system, preparing a good field is time well invested. It should be sown at a depth of 1.3cm to 2.5cm. The crop can be sown by broadcasting the seed at double the usual seediseeding rate.

• When to sow buckwheat

Ideal sowing times are December 25-30, January 1 - 5, and mid April especially as an irrigated crop.
